Kevin Mitchell

MILE 87.5 SEWARD HWY—September 26 at about 9:39 a.m., troopers located a vehicle belonging to Kevin Mitchell, 38 of Anchorage, parked on a trail near mile 87.5 of the Seward Highway. The vehicle was unoccupied. Mitchell has been missing from his residence in Anchorage since Sept. 22. State Troopers, Wildlife Troopers, Anchorage Police, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, State Parks Rangers, and Alaska Railroad Police responded and performed a hasty search of the area but were unable to locate Mitchell. Additional personnel from the Anchorage Police Department Auxiliary Search Team, Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs, and friends and family responded and performed an initial search but Mitchell was not located. An Alaska Mountain Rescue Group incident management team is on scene and were assisting with planning and resources. Search operations were suspended for the night and resumed the following morning.
Man Found Dead in Vehicle from Apparent Suicide
MILE 87.5 SEWARD HWY—September 26 at about 11:40 a.m. troopers were in the area of mile 87.5 of the Seward Highway looking for missing person Kevin Mitchell. While searching the area, Troopers located a Chevrolet Tahoe parked in the woods out of view from the Seward Highway. Inside the vehicle Troopers located Joseph Melton, age 41, of Anchorage, deceased as the result of an apparent suicide. Next of kin have been notified. The State Medical Examiner’s Office responded and took custody of Melton’s body pending an autopsy. No foul play is suspected. This incident was determined to be unrelated to Mitchell’s disappearance.
