Kevin Mitchell

This is Kevin Mitchell of #Anchorage, #Alaska. His date of birth is February 21st 1977. He is a husband and father of two.
On the morning of September 22nd 2015, Kevin left home in his Municipal Light & Power vehicle. At some point before noon, he drove back home and traded out his work vehicle for his 2012 Toyota Tundra. A few days later, his Toyota was located at a lake south of #Girdwood (near mile marker 87.5 of #SewardHighway). There has been no sign of Kevin since 2015.
Inside the work vehicle, Kevin had left his lunch (untouched) and his wallet containing his ID and credit cards. His 11th wedding anniversary was just a couple of days away.
Kevin is now presumed dead but he has never been located. Do you have any information about Kevin Mitchell?

Alaska State Troopers have decided that the official search for Kevin will end today. No new clues have been identified and the search teams have not been able to identify a specific direction of travel.
Although the official search is ending, we would appreciate everyone to keep an eye out. He might have walked along the rail road tracks or highway to a different hiking location. He might have been picked up hitchhiking or found alternate means to leave the general search area. We are unsure.
Additional opportunities to volunteer might become available, we will let you know.

We are asking again for hikers and searchers Monday morning. Sunday was a rainy day- but we have made great progress. We have searched portions of 15 of 39 zones. If you are able, please join us at 9am- we will check in those heading up the mountain and hopefully get better weather for the trooper helicopter to assist us. Check in starts as early as 8 am.
Kern Creek, Ingram creek, Falls Creek and Petersen are all in the plan.

We are waiting on APD to give us the go ahead.  The search and rescue team is on the mountain and the volunteer team must wait for their all-clear.  Will update as soon as possible….. Search will continue on 9/27 at 8 a.m.

Earlier this morning we found Kevin’s Toyota Tundra along the Seward Highway- south of Girdwood, before Portage.  Approximate Mile Marker 87.5.
 
If you are AN EXPERIENCED HIKER/SERCH PERSON and able to help us search- please come as soon as possible.
 
Please bring appropriate foot wear and rain gear, bug dope, water and snacks.  The area is steep and difficult hiking is anticipated.  There will be lots of mud and loose rocks.  Please dress for the weather/warm/waterproof gear.  If you are unable to hike, please call Darla at the number listed below and you can still help by dropping off food/water/snacks.
 
Please bring gps, radios, survey tape for marking areas searched, warm gear, a tarp and any other resources that you think will be helpful.  If someone has a wall tent with heater- call me.  Alternately, a warm up RV station.
 
If anyone can bring tracking dogs or has access to a helicopter, please call me immediately.  We will have search teams out today and in the morning.  If you are interested- please keep an eye on facebook/our website for developing information.

On the eve of Kevin and Nicole Mitchell's 11th wedding anniversary, Kevin had been missing for two days and Nicole was left searching for him and trying to stay strong for their children.
At about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Kevin Mitchell drove to his South Anchorage home, where a cleaning lady was working. He said hello, then traded his Municipal Light and Power vehicle for his personal 2012 gray Toyota Tundra pickup, his wife Nicole Mitchell said.
Kevin Mitchell left his lunch -- an untouched turkey sandwich -- and his wallet, complete with his credit cards and ID, in his work vehicle.
"He hadn't been feeling well lately; he had been having some medical issues," Nicole Mitchell said. "He was having some anxiety about his health issues. I think maybe he was not in a clear state of mind."
Nicole Mitchell wouldn't go into the specifics of her husband's health issues, but said he was not taking any medication at the time of his disappearance.
Where Kevin Mitchell went when he left the family home was still unclear Thursday night.
"He loved the outdoors, so that would be my best guess," Nicole Mitchell said.
She said they have property at Nancy Lake and Seldovia. His parents have property in Cooper Landing.
Nicole Mitchell said actions like this aren't common for her husband, whom she described as being a "super great husband" and "super father" to their 7- and 9-year-old children.
"He was the best I could have ever imagined."
Dozens of people have joined the search, including many of Kevin's co-workers. The family is still hoping to get help from local pilots who are willing to do aerial searches.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska State Troopers say they have found the truck belonging to an Anchorage man who has been missing since Tuesday.
Alaska Dispatch News reports (http://bit.ly/1MSa1tI ) that troopers believe Kevin Mitchell drove away from his home Tuesday morning, sparking frantic search efforts by family and friends.
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says a friend found Mitchell's Toyota Tundra on Saturday morning at a lake south of Girdwood. It was near mile marker 87.5 of the Seward Highway.

As of 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Mitchell had not been found.
Troopers also found a body inside second vehicle about half a mile from Mitchell's car. Peters says the discovery is "completely unrelated" to the search for Mitchell.
She says the person had been wanted on an arrest warrant and appeared to have committed suicide.

Since Mitchell's truck was found the search has focused on the mountains near where it was located. Searchers have found small items like tarps and empty drink bottles in the thick brush and steep creek beds, said search organizer Jenith Flynn Sunday night, but added that "there's nothing we can directly link to Kevin yet."

A campaign spearheaded by family and friends and disseminated via social media and email had grown over the weekend, attracting what search organizers described as a tidal wave of support. By Sunday evening, more than 1,000 people had joined a Facebook group focused on Mitchell’s disappearance.

The Story
Kevin Lynn Mitchell, 38, of Anchorage, was presumed deceased on September 22, 2015 from hypothermia amidst the Alaskan wilderness after an exhaustive search effort at mile 87.5 along the Seward Highway led by the Alaskan Troopers and AMRG and family and friends. He was born February 21, 1977 in Anchorage, the son of Gary and Janet (Ground) Mitchell. He often shared good memories of their family cabin in Cooper Landing where he hiked, fished and explored nature. Kevin graduated from Dimond High School in 1995 where he was an honor roll student, took 2nd place in the State Wrestling Championship and won the State Football championship as an all-star varsity football player. He received a scholarship for wrestling at the Southern Oregon University in Ashland before he transferred to the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls where he obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Kevin had a passion for learning and taking on new hobbies from hiking, biking, and kayaking to wood working and cooking. In college, he travelled in the South Pacific as part of “Semester at Sea”. He also got training in Houston on a C-131 reduced-gravity aircraft. His passion for flight was re-ignited when Kevin started paragliding and para-motoring in his 30s amongst the beauty of Alaska’s mountains. While working as a field engineer for General Electric, he met his future wife Nicole Leary and asked her to come with him to Alaska. They were married in Greenfield, Indiana on September 25, 2004. They lived in Anchorage where Kevin worked as a Power Plant Superintendent at Municipal Light

A massive search for an Anchorage man missing since Tuesday intensified Saturday when the man’s truck was discovered south of Girdwood, and police, family, friends and volunteers scoured the area in the hope of finding him.

Kevin Mitchell, a father of two, is believed to have driven away from his South Anchorage home around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. His wife, family and friends have been frantically looking for him over the past few days, creating a Facebook page and sending out emailed updates and requests for help.

Around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, a friend discovered Mitchell’s gray Toyota Tundra at a lake south of Girdwood, near mile marker 87.5 of the Seward Highway, according to Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters.

As of 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Mitchell had not been found. Searchers braved cold, rainy weather to fan out from the lake into the surrounding terrain, which family friend Jenith Flynn described as “steep and treacherous.”

In an unrelated incident, troopers on Saturday found a second vehicle parked about a half-mile from where Mitchell’s car was found. A body was found inside the vehicle, dead of an apparent suicide, Peters said.

The body belonged to Joseph Melton, who had been wanted on charges of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and violating a protective order, according to a dispatch posted by troopers early Sunday.

Peters said the discovery of Melton's body was “completely unrelated” to the search for Mitchell.

“It’s just a coincidence that at about the same location, the other vehicle was found,” Peters said.

Throughout the day, Mitchell’s family and friends ran the search in coordination with troopers, Flynn said. While the terrain was steep, Mitchell was an avid hiker, she said. In an email update early Saturday afternoon, Flynn put out a plea for help from experienced hikers, searchers, helicopter pilots and tracking dogs to help with the search. Flynn also asked searchers to bring proper footwear, rain gear and warm clothing, as well as GPS devices, radios, survey tape for marking areas and tarps.

A donation center has been set up at Davis Construction & Engineers Inc. on A Street, where Mitchell’s wife, Nicole, works, and a list of requested items was posted to a "Find Kevin Mitchell" Facebook page. Flynn said people have been “super responsive” to the calls for help.

At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Flynn said the search had been suspended for the night and would start again at 7:30 a.m. Sunday near mile 87.5. Alaska Mountain Rescue will lead and coordinate Sunday's search along with troopers, she said.

Anyone who has information on Mitchell's whereabouts or wants to help search can call 907-771-9239, Flynn said. A $10,000 reward has been offered for Mitchell's discovery.

So the last person that saw him was the cleaning lady when he was changing cars correct? Was he supposed to be going back to work after lunch? He won't be getting very far without his wallet or credit card unless he has cash.
